Women's Correctional Facility
The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) and the Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) are working toward replacing the facility that houses women, the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility, and have initiated process with the Town of Essex Planning Commission. The request is to amend the zoning regulations to allow this public facility use on two particular state owned parcels. See below for the specific zoning amendment request from the state. This page is provided to Essex residents as a resource to know where to locate more information about this project that is sponsored and paid for by the State of Vermont.

Community Forums
Jill Evans, the director of the Essex Community Justice Center (ECJC), organized two community forums to discuss the potential establishment of a correctional facility in the area.
Community Forum - 10/5/2024
ECJC's first community forum on the proposed new women's correctional facility was held on 10/5/24. This forum was about the programs offered inside the current women's facility in South Burlington.
Community Forum - 10/9/2024
ECJC's second community forum on the proposed new women's correctional facility took place on 10/9/24. In this forum panelists spoke to the local impacts of the current women's facility in South Burlington as well as the proposed new women's facility and re-entry center project.
Planning Commission Meetings
Planning Commission meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Meetings are hybrid and are held at 6:30 pm in person and on Zoom.
