The deadline for the Requests for Proposals (RFP) for a public engagement process around the design and planning of future development at 80 & 90 Upper Main Street was Friday, February 23. A selection process will follow, with the goal of beginning work by April 1, 2024. As mentioned in a memo included in the February 12, 2024 Selectboard packet, staff expects the work to be complete by December 13, 2024, which would leave enough time for the Selectboard to decide whether or not to pursue any questions – such as a bond vote – on the 2025 Town Meeting ballot. 

The design process may now include the possibility of Essex Rescue locating at 80 & 90 Upper Main St. Essex Rescue recently approached Town staff about locating new facilities on the Town property, perhaps attached or adjacent to a new fire station. Town staff and Essex Rescue officials can envision cost savings for both entities if Rescue and Essex Fire are able to share some facilities. Staff anticipates including this option in the planning work in order to better explore and understand potential benefits and/or concerns.
