Property Taxes


The second installment of the 2019 to 2020 Property Tax were due Monday, March 16, 2020. Payments will be accepted anytime but must be paid by March 16, 2020 in order to avoid 8% penalty.

2019-20 Property tax bills were mailed to property owners on August 13th, 2019.  Taxes may be paid upon receipt, or can be paid by the due dates on the bill.  The first installment must be paid no later than September 16, 2019 and the second installment must be paid no later than March 16, 2020. Payments will be accepted anytime but must be paid or postmarked by the due dates to avoid 8% penalty.  IMPORTANT! This is the only property tax bill you will receive.

Checks should be made payable to “Town of Essex” and may be paid at either the Village Office or the Town Office. NOTE - we are currently closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Exterior drop-boxes are provided at each location but please be sure to include a copy of your bill with your payment to provide us with the correct account number. To request a receipt please email

Credit and debit cards are accepted at either office (both currently closed), by phone at 888-877-0450, or on our online payment system. Convenience fees will be charged (2.65%, $3.95 minimum). There is also an E-check option available. Paying by E-check includes a flat $1.95 convenience fee. The E-check option is only available at this time through the Essex Junction section of our site.

Another payment option is to sign up for the free automatic tax payment program.  Enroll by filling out the form below and send with a voided check to Town of Essex, Attn: Finance, 81 Main Street, Essex Jct., VT 05452.  Installment amounts would be automatically deducted from your bank account on the due date.

For questions about the tax bill, or if you need a copy of your bill, please call the Town office at 802-879-0413. Payments received or postmarked after the due date are considered delinquent and will be charged an 8% penalty. 1% interest will be charged the 16th of each month thereafter.
Please be aware of due dates and methods of paying property taxes. The Town is required by Essex Town Charter Ch. 8, Sec. 802 to charge penalty and interest on balances unpaid by the date due. Delinquent balances are charged an 8% one-time penalty immediately after the due date and 1% interest monthly thereafter, until paid in full. Pursuant to 24 V.S.A. §1535, taxpayers have the right to seek relief from the Board of Abatement for the reasons outlined in statute.

Important - Notice to Village of Essex Junction Property Owners

Changes have been made to the way property taxes are being billed and collected. The Village of Essex Junction, Essex Junction School District and the Town of Essex have entered into agreements for the Town of Essex to bill and collect all property taxes in the town, including Village of Essex Junction and Essex Junction School District. All tax rates pertaining to your property are listed on your Town of Essex property tax bill. All of your homestead/house site information for Vermont income sensitivity filing is now combined on this one bill.

Checks should be made payable to Town of Essex, but may be dropped off at either the Village office or the Town Office (currently closed - dropbox only). If you have questions about your property tax bill, please call the Town office at 802-879-0413.

You will not receive a separate tax bill from the Village
