Town Departments

There are many ways that the Town of Essex works to serve the community.  The following are the major departments of the town, including a description of their main functions.  If you need information on or assistance with a particular town function or service, these sections of the website should be helpful to you.

Community Development: Responsible for all planning and zoning issues, as well as health officer, GIS computer mapping services, and staffing of planning commission and zoning board of adjustment proceedings. Key staff members include the Community Development Director and the Zoning Administrator.

Finance: Responsible for all financial record keeping, tax, water and sewer billings, insurances, and accounts payable and receivable. The key staff member is the Finance Director.

Fire Department: Providing a dedicated paid volunteer service to the community by protecting lives and property. Key staff members include the Fire Chief, and the 1st and 2nd Assistant Chiefs.

Library: Responsible for loaning materials such as books, periodicals, books on tape, cassettes, videos, puzzles, and children's book and tape kits. Key staff members include the Librarian and the Assistant Librarian.

Police Department: Responsible for all safety and emergency activities in the town. Key staff members include the Chief of Police and the Captain.

Parks & Recreation: The Parks and Recreation department serves the community of Essex through People, Parks and Programs. Recreation program areas include personal development, healthy lifestyles, community building and environmental stewardship. Essex parks protect and preserve natural resources and provide facilities that are safe, clean, and green. The senior van service allows seniors convenient accessibility for healthcare, wellness, and recreation needs. Sand Hill Pool provides opportunities to develop lifelong skill, personal development, and employment opportunities.

Public Works: Responsible for the maintenance, planning, and design of the infrastructure (water, sewer, and roads) of the Town.  Key staff members include the Director of Public Works, Assistant Engineer, and Highway Foreman.

Real Estate Appraisal: Responsible for the appraisal and assessment of all taxable real estate for the purpose of establishing the grand list. The key staff member is the Assessor.

Town Clerk
Responsible for the recording and maintenance of all documents pertaining to land records, birth, death, and marriage records, issuing licenses for marriage, dogs, fish & game, liquor and entertainment, receiving monies for tax, water, and sewer payments, voter registration, and notary services. Key staff members include the Town Clerk and Assistant Town Clerks.
