The Essex Free Library is an integral part of historic Essex Center. In 1987, voters approved funds to renovate the brick church on the common to provide 6,000 square feet of collection space on three air-conditioned floors. As of August 2014, the collection housed 35,319 titles to serve its approximately 9,000 patrons from Essex and neighboring communities. The library also provides access to computers and wi-fi.
